  1. Look, there may be a component of it, but the fact that we have a lottery system that randomly decides who gets the greatest opportunity in the world – one of the best things that we have in this country is the fact that everybody wants to be here. And to give that away randomly, to have to vetting no system, to have no way to determine who comes, why they’re here, and if they want to contribute to society, is a problem.

    Fact Checks

    • But vetting mechanisms exist, including additional in-depth review of applicants who need additional scrutiny. Not all who are awarded the lottery end up getting a visa, but individuals who do make it to the visa application process must undergo background checks and security screenings.
  2. But look, today’s announcement has nothing to do with the President, has nothing to do with the President’s campaign or campaign activity.

    Claims

The October 2017 Special Counsel Indictments Are Unrelated to Trump's Campaign
According to the indictments, some allegations are related to the 2016 Trump campaign.

    Fact Checks

    • It’s true that Trump himself isn’t wrapped up in the charges, but a campaign adviser is.
  3. Imagine how much better off Americans will be after we pass the biggest tax cut in American history

    Claims

Trump's Tax Plan Would Be the Largest Tax Cut in US History
Estimates vary due to a lack of details and a changing plan, but in all it falls well short of the largest tax cut in history.
    1. Donald Trump Donald Trump
    2. Mike Pence Mike Pence
    3. Neal Dunn Neal Dunn

  4. Republicans - and maybe even a few Democrats - are coming together to pass the biggest tax cut in our history and make America great again

    Claims

Trump's Tax Plan Would Be the Largest Tax Cut in US History

  5. The average American family would get a $4,000 raise under the President’s tax cut plan. So how could any member of Congress be against it?

    Claims

Trump's Tax Plan Would Result in Over $4,000 in Savings per Household
This number, from the White House Council of Economic Advisers, is strongly disputed by independent experts.
    1. Donald Trump Donald Trump
    2. Ken Calvert Ken Calvert

    Fact Checks

    • We found that even if you buy the White House’s math – which many economists do not – this selling point leaves out a lot of information for a general audience. There are lots of reasons that this $4,000 windfall might not materialize.
  6. Senator Corker worked with Nancy Pelosi and the Obama administration to pave the way for that legislation and basically rolled out the red carpet for the Iran deal.

    Claims

Sen. Corker Was Behind Iran Nuclear Deal
He had no role in crafting it, and was opposed to it.
    1. Donald Trump Donald Trump

    Fact Checks

    • Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, had no role in crafting the 2015 international agreement forged by the U.S. and other world powers to constrain Iran’s ability to build a nuclear arsenal. Corker was a vocal opponent of the accord and argued President Barack Obama should have made the seven-nation pact a treaty subject to approval by the Senate.
    • Kelsey Davenport, the director for nonproliferation policy at the Arms Control Association, also said the Trump administration was way off the mark.

“It is ludicrous to argue that Senator Corker and Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act are responsible for delivering the nuclear deal with Iran,” she said. “If anything, (the law) nearly prevented the deal’s implementation and undermined the agreement.”

  7. We are the highest taxed – corporate tax – in the developed economy. That’s a fact.

    Claims

The US Has the Highest Corporate Tax Rate in the Developed World
The US does have a high statutory rate (up to 35%), but significant deductions and exemptions mean companies actually end up paying a much lower rate; the effective tax rate is about average. Furthermore, while the statutory rate is relatively high, it is not the highest in the developed world; that distinction goes to the United Arab Emirates with rates up to 55%.

  8. I think if you look to Chicago, where you had over 4,000 victims of gun-related crimes last year, they have the strictest gun laws in the country. That certainly hasn’t helped there, so I think we have to – when that time comes for those conversations to take place, then I think we need to look at things that may actually have that real impact.

    Claims

Chicago Has the Strictest Gun Control Laws in the US
This hasn’t been true since the Supreme Court decided McDonald v. Chicago in 2010.
    1. Donald Trump Donald Trump
    2. Steve Scalise Steve Scalise

    Fact Checks

    • But while gun violence in Chicago is high, the rest of this common talking point doesn’t really hold water.
      NPR
    • There was a brief time between 2008 and 2010 – the window during which Washington, D.C.’s handgun ban had been invalidated but Chicago’s still stood – where that might have been true. But federal court rulings effectively undid city and state laws severely restricting gun use and ownership in the Chicago. When it comes to the concealed carry of weapons, Chicago has less authority to impose limitations than do many other large U.S. cities.
  9. The President in no way form or fashion has ever promoted or encouraged violence.

    Claims

Donald Trump Has Never Encouraged Violence
    He has, on numerous occasions.

    Fact Checks

    • We found one example — when Trump said, “If you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of them, would you?” — that clearly fits the criteria of promoting or encouraging violence.

This was not an isolated incident; we found at least seven other examples in which Trump offered public musings that showed a tolerance for, and sometimes even a favorable disposition toward, physical violence.

    • This is laughable.

Even if you don’t believe Trump has technically incited violence (which he has been sued for), he clearly nodded toward violence at his campaign rallies. Sometimes it was veiled; other times it was unmistakable. Sometimes he was talking about self-defense, but it was clear he was advocating for a “form of violence.”

  10. I think he’s heard from the rank and file of the FBI, but particularly someone who had done a thorough review and someone who has the respect and reputation that the deputy attorney general has, he took that seriously. He took the recommendation seriously. And he made a decision based on that.

    Claims

Trump Fired Comey Only at Request of DoJ Officials
Trump later admitted he decided to fire Comey first, then sought justification from DoJ.

    2. Sean Spicer Sean Spicer
